Kaohsiung Lighthouse, Kaohsiung
Kaohsiung Lighthouse, also known as Cihou Lighthouse, stands atop Cihou Mountain at the entrance to Kaohsiung Harbor, serving as both a historic landmark and a scenic viewpoint. Built in 1883 by British engineers following the opening of Takao Harbor to foreign trade, the original structure was designed in a traditional Chinese rectangular red-brick style to aid navigation for growing commercial shipping traffic. In 1918, during the Japanese colonial era, it was renovated into the octagonal, white brick tower seen today-a rare architectural form in Taiwan.
The lighthouse rises 15.2 meters and features a black-domed lantern room and an encircling balcony, offering sweeping panoramic views over Kaohsiung City, the Taiwan Strait, and the harbor below. Its elevated location atop the mountain gives it a commanding presence, making it a prominent symbol of the port city. The combination of its practical role and unique design has earned it the status of a municipal heritage site, valued for both its maritime function and historical significance.
Visitors to Kaohsiung Lighthouse can climb the path to the summit for not only a glimpse into 19th- and early 20th-century coastal engineering, but also some of the best vistas in the city. The peaceful setting, cool sea breeze, and dramatic coastal views make it a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.
