Rainbow Church, Kaohsiung

Rainbow Church, Kaohsiung

Located within Qijin Coastal Park on Cijin Island, the Rainbow Church is one of Kaohsiung’s most photogenic and popular art installations. Despite its name, it’s not a functioning religious building but rather a modern, open-air structure designed to resemble a chapel using vibrant, rainbow-colored acrylic panels. Framed by the beach and ocean beyond, the installation has become a favorite spot for tourists, couples, and photographers, thanks to its striking aesthetics and seaside setting.

The Rainbow Church was created as a playful blend of color, light, and form, evoking the feeling of a rainbow arch stretching toward the sea. It symbolizes joy, love, and a bright future-though not tied to any specific narrative or event, its uplifting design has resonated with many, particularly following Taiwan’s legalization of same-sex marriage. Its presence adds a splash of whimsy and romance to the island, especially appealing for wedding shoots or casual photo sessions at any time of day, from sunlit mornings to golden-hour evenings.

Visitors will find the structure beside the Qijin Visitor Information Center along Section 3 of Qijin Road. The installation’s pink cross and abstract “altar” give a subtle nod to traditional church architecture while maintaining a playful, modern tone. The colorful panels reflect light in ever-changing ways depending on the weather and hour, making each visit feel slightly different.

That is only one of the reasons why Lotus Pond is today one of southern Taiwan’s most photographed landmarks. Created in 1951, the pond was envisioned both as a...  view more

Kaohsiung Introduction Walking Tour

Kaohsiung didn’t start as Taiwan’s southern powerhouse. Its first name, “Takau,” came from the Makatau people, who lived off fishing, hunting, and small-scale farming in a land once described simply as a bamboo forest. Chinese settlers under the Ming and Qing dynasties kept the name, bending the pronunciation to their tongues. Then in 1895, Japan claimed Taiwan and gave the place a new...  view more
