Kauppatori (Market Square), Helsinki

Kauppatori (Market Square), Helsinki (must see)

Market Square is one of Helsinki's liveliest public spaces, where the city's maritime character comes to life along the Baltic Sea. Located at the eastern end of Esplanadi Park on the edge of the South Harbour, it has long served as a meeting point for trade, travel, and everyday life.

Since the 19th century, Market Square has played an important role in Helsinki's development as a port city, connecting local producers, fishermen, merchants, and travelers arriving by sea. Today, many sightseeing cruises and local boats depart from the harbor beside the square, including the year-round ferry to Suomenlinna Sea Fortress. Nearby landmarks include the Presidential Palace, the Swedish Embassy, and Helsinki City Hall.

Visitors will find colorful stalls selling souvenirs, handicrafts, fresh fish, seafood, seasonal berries, mushrooms, and local snacks. It is a good place to try Finnish specialties such as traditional Finnish meat pie or small deep-fried whitefish, often served with potatoes and garlic sauce. In autumn, the square becomes especially lively during the famous Baltic Herring Market, held every October.

On the south side of the square stands the Old Market Hall, a popular place to sample Finnish delicacies in a more sheltered setting. Market Square offers more than shopping: it is a place to watch ferries, observe harbor life, and see vendors at work while enjoying one of Helsinki's classic waterfront scenes.
