Vanha kauppahalli (Old Market Hall), Helsinki (must see)
Old Market Hall is one of Helsinki's most historic and atmospheric destinations, offering visitors a glimpse into the city's culinary traditions and everyday life. Located beside Market Square on the South Harbour, it is the oldest indoor market hall in Finland.
Built during a period when Helsinki was replacing crowded open-air markets with cleaner and more organized indoor trading spaces, the hall reflected growing concerns about food hygiene and modern urban planning. Its elegant brick façade and long interior arcade remain fine examples of late 19th-century architecture, while the year "1888" displayed on the building commemorates its opening. This historic exterior detail is clearly visible from the cobblestone pathway directly in front of the main harbor-facing entrance. The gold-plated "1888" pediment is set into the red and blonde brickwork above the arched doorway.
Inside, visitors will find a wide variety of specialty shops selling fresh fish, shellfish, cheeses, meats, baked goods, fruits, vegetables, spices, chocolates, coffee, tea, and local delicacies, alongside small gifts and kitchenware. As you walk along the central corridor of the original cast-iron arcade, you will see two long, symmetrical rows of deep-stained historical wooden merchant stalls. Their compact counters and glass displays preserve the look of traditional market trade.
The hall is especially famous for its salmon soup, fish sandwiches, and reindeer burgers, making it an excellent place to sample traditional Finnish cuisine. The salmon soup stalls are found toward the center of the main hall corridor. Look for the lively counters serving steaming bowls of local comfort food, often accompanied by rye bread and enjoyed by both locals and visitors seeking a simple, warming meal.
Old Market Hall offers an authentic taste of Helsinki's everyday life. Its location beside the ferry terminal for Suomenlinna makes it a convenient place to enjoy breakfast or lunch before exploring the islands.
