Khoja Mosque, Nairobi

Khoja Mosque, Nairobi

At the intersection of Moi Avenue and the starting point of River Road in Nairobi, you'll find a notable three-story stone building. While many refer to it as Khoja Mosque, its official name is Nairobi Town Jamatkhana, which translates to "prayer house or mosque."

This mosque was constructed by the Ismaili community under the leadership of the Aga Khan, with the foundation stone being laid in January 1920. Just two years later, in 1922, the construction was completed. The presence of the mosque played a crucial role in fostering economic development in the vicinity, as it prompted many individuals to establish their businesses nearby. This eventually led to the street being named Bazaar Street, which was later changed to Biashara Street.

Moreover, the mosque holds historical significance for several reasons. Firstly, its prominent location in the heart of colonial Nairobi made it a standout structure of its time. Its construction and inauguration marked it as a 'high-profile' edifice. Secondly, it symbolized the enduring settlement of the Ismaili community in colonial Kenya. Records indicate that Queen Elizabeth paid a visit to the mosque in 1956.

The mosque's exterior resembles a grand palace with stone blocks, impressive entrance doors, and a clock on the dome. Inside, there are graceful arches, finely crafted stone decorations, white walls, and terracotta-painted pillars. Potted flowers enhance the interior's ambiance.

The clock tower has historical significance, serving as a reference point in the 1920s. The ground floor features a courtyard with wooden benches, potted flowers, and a glass dome for shelter. The library was moved from its original location next to the main entrance.
