Kibera, Nairobi

Kibera, Nairobi

Kibera ("Forest" or "Jungle") is a district within the Nairobi Area and a neighborhood in Nairobi, Kenya. It holds the distinction of being the largest slum in Nairobi and the largest urban slum across the African continent. According to Kenya Population and Housing Census, Kibera was reported to have a population of 170,070, which contrasts with earlier estimations ranging from one to two million people. Various sources propose that the total population of Kibera could be anywhere from 500,000 to well over 1,000,000, depending on how one defines the boundaries of the slum.

A significant majority of the residents in Kibera live in dire poverty, with their daily earnings falling below the meager sum of US$1.00. Unemployment rates are alarmingly high, and there is a substantial presence of individuals living with HIV, as well as cases of AIDS. Instances of assault and rape are unfortunately common. Educational opportunities are limited, with few schools available, and the majority of families cannot afford to provide education for their children. Access to clean water is a scarce commodity, and diseases stemming from poor hygiene practices are widespread. A substantial portion of the population in this area lacks access to basic services, such as electricity, running water, and adequate medical care.

In response to these challenges, the government has launched a clearance program aimed at replacing the slum with a residential district featuring high-rise apartments. The plan is to relocate the current residents to these new buildings once they are completed.
