Nairobi National Park, Nairobi
Nairobi National Park, established on December 16th, 1946, holds the distinction of being Kenya's inaugural gazetted park. Situated just 7 kilometers (about 4.3 miles) to the south of Nairobi, it boasts a unique status as the world's sole wildlife park in such close proximity to a major city. Encompassing an expanse of 117 square kilometers, equivalent to 45 square miles, the park is situated at an elevation of approximately 1500-1800 meters (5000-6000 feet) above sea level.
The park's terrain is a blend of dense woodland on its periphery, undulating plains and valleys, and wooded areas where several rivers converge. The predominant vegetation comprises dry transitional savanna, characterized by species like acacias, thorny varieties, muhuhu, Cape chestnut, and Kenya olive, which serve as crucial habitats for the park's wildlife.
Nairobi National Park is a vital rhino sanctuary and home to 100+ mammal species, including the Big Five (lion, buffalo, leopard, and rhino), as well as zebras, giraffes, antelope, and reptiles. It's a must-visit for wildlife lovers in Kenya, featuring a unique wildebeest and zebra migration. Birdwatchers will also love its 500+ bird species, including European migrants like the Secretary bird, Lesser kestrel, and Martial eagle.
Notably, Nairobi National Park is also the location of the Nairobi Animal Orphanage, founded in 1963, which serves as a vital facility for the treatment and rehabilitation of various wildlife species, including lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and jackals. Visitors can also delight in observing a wide variety of bird species like parrots, guinea fowls, crowned cranes, and ostriches.
Additionally, the park offers an array of attractions, including the Ivory burning Site Monument, hippo pool walking trails, Nairobi Safari Walk, and spacious picnic areas. Despite its compact size and proximity to the city, it thrives as a sanctuary for rhinoceroses and remains a popular destination for tourists exploring Kenya.
