Koko Head, Honolulu

Koko Head, Honolulu

Koko Head is situated along the southern coast of Oahu, where evidence of past volcanic activity from tens of thousands of years ago is still visible. These remnants include volcanic tuff cones, which are essentially solidified ash formations left behind after volcanic eruptions. Among these geological features, we find Koko Crater, a substantial tuff cone standing at a towering height of 1208 feet, and a lower depression that contributes to the distinctive horseshoe shape of Hanauma Bay. Koko Head serves as a defining landmark for Maunalua Bay on its eastern side, and a significant portion of the eastern end of Oahu is occupied by Koko Head Regional Park.

The vicinity surrounding Koko Head has become a popular attraction for tourists visiting Hawaii. Inside Koko Crater, there's the Koko Crater Botanical Garden and horse stables, designated for the cultivation and preservation of a diverse array of rare plant species, including cacti, aloes, succulents, bougainvillea, and native flora. In close proximity, you'll discover Hanauma Bay, a bay shaped like a horseshoe, formed by yet another tuff cone. Today, it serves as a conservation area for green sea turtles and houses a rich variety of over 400 fish species. Lastly, there's Sandy Beach, a renowned destination for surfing, wind surfing, parasailing, and kite flying, thanks to the area's strong and consistent trade winds.
