Cimetiere de Laeken (Laeken Cemetery), Brussels

At the top of Avenue de la Reine, this cemetery stands as the city's oldest burial ground still in function and serves as the final resting place for many influential Belgians. It has earned the moniker of the "Belgian Père Lachaise" due to its historical significance and the abundance of captivating 19th-century funerary art.

Among the notable figures interred here is the artist Jef Dillen, whose tomb is adorned with a replica of Rodin's iconic sculpture, 'The Thinker', and Maria Felicia Garcia, the celebrated Spanish soprano recognized as Maria Malibran. Joseph Poelaert, the visionary architect responsible for the grand Palace of Justice ("Palais de Justice"), is also laid to rest here, which is quite fitting as he was the designed of the nearby neo-Gothic church of Notre-Dame de Laeken. Constructed over several decades, the church stands as a tribute to Louise-Marie, the first Queen of Belgium, and houses the Royal Crypt, the final resting place for members of the country's royal family.
