Lakpahana Handicrafts, Colombo

Lakpahana Handicrafts is a well-known handicraft shop that focuses on traditional products made by local artisans. It has been active since 1973 and was founded by Siva Obeyesekere to help preserve traditional skills and give craftsmen a reliable place to sell their work. The shop is privately run and serves as the marketing arm of the Sri Lanka Craftsmen and Artisans Association.

Inside, the layout is clear and easy to follow, with items grouped by type and material. The collection includes batik fabrics, carved and painted masks, pottery, lacework, woven mats, and handmade jewelry. Some sections are dedicated to specific crafts, such as batik, making it easier to compare patterns and techniques. Many items are linked to village life, religious traditions, or long-used designs, while others are practical objects made using traditional methods.

The shop also includes a small section with traditional Sri Lankan food, such as kalu dodol, aasmi, and kokis, along with local snacks and drinks. Prices are fixed, and the calm setting makes it easy to browse and focus on well-made, locally produced crafts rather than mass-produced souvenirs.
