Navarangahala Hall, Colombo

Navarangahala Hall, Colombo

Navarangahala Hall is a national theatre space used for drama, music, and traditional performances such as Kandyan dance and drumming. It was built because there were few indoor venues designed for local performing arts. The foundation stone was laid on November 11, 1966, and the hall was officially opened on August 1, 1969 by Prime Minister Dudley Senanayake.

The hall was designed by architect Mahinda P. Dias as an indoor open-air theatre, following ideas from the Natya Shastra. It uses a reinforced concrete structure with open sides instead of solid walls, allowing natural airflow that suits the tropical climate.

It can hold about 1,000–1,500 people, which allows it to host large public events and stage performances. The hall is also important in modern history, as it was the place where the 1972 Republican Constitution was enacted. When events are held, visitors experience a space designed for good airflow, clear views, and large audiences.
