Les Jardins Exotiques de Bouknadel (Exotic Gardens of Bouknadel), Rabat

Located about 20 kilometers from Rabat, on the road to Kenitra, The Exotic Gardens of Bouknadel are a botanical wonderland dedicated to biodiversity and ecological education. Spanning 4.5 hectares, the gardens showcase a stunning variety of over 600 plant species from around the world, as well as more than 80 animal species, housed in aviaries, a vivarium, and a dedicated turtle zone.

The gardens were the brainchild of Marcel François, a French horticultural engineer who, in 1952, transformed this land into a global botanical experience. Inspired by his passion for exotic plants and Morocco’s natural beauty, François not only cultivated rare species but also designed the gardens with a theatrical and educational approach, presenting landscapes from different continents. The gardens officially opened to the public in 1961.

Ownership shifted in 1973 under Morocco’s "Moroccanization" policy, transferring the site to the Ministry of Agriculture while François remained its manager. However, he lost control in 1981, and after years of mismanagement and neglect, he left Morocco in 1984. For nearly two decades, the gardens deteriorated, suffering from visitor misuse and lack of upkeep.

A turning point came in 1998 with the formation of the Friends of the Exotic Gardens of Bouknadel Association. Volunteers embarked on restoration projects, reviving plant nurseries (1999-2001) and raising awareness about conservation. Today, the gardens are once again a flourishing oasis, preserved as an ecological and educational site.

Visitors can explore bridges, ponds, huts, labyrinths, and scenic alleys, as well as a museum housed in Marcel François’ former residence. The museum highlights the garden’s history and the restoration efforts led by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection.

With its blend of botanical richness, cultural inspiration, and environmental awareness, The Exotic Gardens of Bouknadel stand as a testament to one man’s vision and a community’s dedication to preserving a green legacy.
