Liberator General San Martin Theater, Cordoba
Liberator General San Martin Theater is one of Argentina’s major historic performance venues. Opened in 1891 as Teatro Rivera Indarte, it was designed by Italian architect Francesco Tamburini and modeled on European opera houses. Many materials, furnishings, and stage elements were imported from Europe. Its name later changed several times with Argentina’s political shifts before returning to its current form.
The building shows late 19th-century Italian-influenced eclectic design, with a formal façade, sculptural details, and a decorated interior. Its hall was built for opera, concerts, theatre, and public events, supported by adaptable stage technology. Beneath the stage, old wooden machinery with ropes, pulleys, and traps recalls early theater engineering. Enrico Caruso’s 1915 performance adds to its musical history.
The theater is still an active cultural space, used for opera, ballet, orchestral music, chamber concerts, and stage productions. A 2019 restoration revealed original painted details hidden under later layers. Backstage folklore tells of Romilio, a bohemian artist once linked to the building, whose spirit is said to cause footsteps, noises, and moving objects after hours.
