This charming museum, dedicated to chronicling the ascent and decline of London's once-extensive canal system, is housed within the former Victorian warehouse of Swiss-Italian ice-cream maker Carlo Gatti, originally employed to store ice imported from Norway via ships and canal barges. Consequently, the museum also delves into the ice-cream trade in addition to London's canal history.

Filled with traditional narrowboats, the museum offers a poignant glimpse into the challenging life of canal boat families, with exhibits that span various aspects, encompassing the construction of canals throughout the UK and insights into the history of the building itself. Adult visitors can expect to see a meticulously restored "butty" (a narrowboat lacking an engine, used for storage), as well as a collection of distinctive Measham Ware pottery and crockery, while younger visitors can engage in interactive activities and learn about Henrietta, the museum's horse.

To enrich the exhibitions, the museum integrates oral history from its own collection, employing "listening posts" scattered throughout the building to cover a range of topics. In close proximity, at the Battlebridge Basin, you'll encounter painted narrowboats belonging to contemporary canal dwellers, all within a short distance of the vibrant King's Cross redevelopment area.
