Loudoun House, Lexington

Loudoun House, Lexington

The Loudoun House stands as a splendid testament to 19th‑century creativity and ambition. Constructed between 1850 and 1852 for affluent lawyer Francis Key Hunt-cousin of Francis Scott Key-the mansion was designed by the illustrious Alexander Jackson Davis and built by local master John McMurtry. This striking castellated Gothic Revival villa, known for its crenellated towers, limestone‑arched windows, and romantic parapets, is one of only five surviving residences of its kind by Davis in the United States.

Hunt’s inheritance funded the construction, which cost nearly $30,000-triple the original budget. He named the estate “Loudoun” in honor of his wife Julia’s favourite song, The Bells of Loudoun. Built on a generous 50‑acre gift from Julia’s family, the estate became both a lavish home and a cultural gem. The grandeur of its interiors-from walnut woodwork and marble mantels to stained‑glass windows and stencil‑painted ceilings-echoes a richly artistic vision.

Over the years, the estate passed through notable hands: Colonel William Cassius Goodloe acquired it in 1884, and the City of Lexington purchased the property in the 1920s, transforming its grounds into Castlewood Park. Today, the Loudoun House serves as the home of the Lexington Art League, hosting rotating exhibitions, open‑studio events, and community classes, making art accessible to all and breathing contemporary life into this historic landmark.

For tourists, Loudoun House offers a captivating blend of architectural wonder, lush parkland, and creative energy. Whether you're marveling at its soaring towers, engaging with local art exhibitions, or simply enjoying a peaceful stroll through verdant surroundings, this Gothic Revival masterpiece provides a serene yet inspiring retreat in the heart of Lexington. Admission is complimentary, with seasonal exhibits and occasional guided tours-perfect for history buffs, architecture aficionados, and art lovers alike.
