Mariensaeule (Marian Column), Trier

Mariensaeule (Marian Column), Trier

The Marian Column (Mariensaule) stands as a symbol of faith and history above Trier on Pulsberg. It rises to an impressive 40.9 meters and has a Neo-Gothic design that makes it the tallest structure in the city. Built from sandstone blocks, some sourced from ancient Roman walls, this monument honors Mary, mother of Jesus, and embodies Trier’s deep-rooted Catholic heritage.

Erected in 1859 and completed in 1866, it was financed by generous contributions from the Catholic community of Trier, who aimed to assert their spiritual presence during a time of tension with the Protestant-influenced Prussian government. The column is a response to the 1856 decision by Prussian King Frederick William IV, which granted Trier's Protestants use of the Basilica, Constantine’s historic throne hall, for services.

The Marian Column's symbolic placement, directly overlooking the Basilica and visible throughout the Moselle Valley, was a statement of Catholic endurance. Consecrated by Bishop Leopold Pellgram, the column soon became more than just a monument; it became a familiar guardian figure for the people of Trier, affectionately known as “Pillars Marie.”

Today, the Marian Column unites rather than divides, offering sweeping views of Trier and the surrounding landscape, particularly breathtaking at night when it is illuminated by donations from the community. This beloved landmark not only provides an unparalleled view over the city but serves as a reminder of Trier’s layered history and the peaceful coexistence that prevails today.

Nowadays it sounds a bit weird that a small German town of Trier, some 20-minute drive from the Luxembourg border, was once the capital of the mighty Western Roman Empire. Still, "the second Rome", as the emperor Diocletian used to call it, today fully lives up to its former status.

Founded in 15 BC by the Roman emperor Octavian Augustus, this oldest city in Germany is a home to the...  view more
