Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, Annapolis
Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts is a community arts center where visitors can attend concerts, theater performances, art exhibitions, and creative classes. It opened in 1979 after local residents worked together to turn a vacant school building into a place dedicated to the arts. Since then, it has become a cultural gathering space where people come to watch performances, see artwork, and take part in creative programs.
The building was constructed in 1932 as the first Annapolis High School. It has brick walls, large windows, and wide hallways typical of school architecture from that time. After the high school moved to a new campus, the building was preserved and adapted for cultural use. Former classrooms were converted into studios, rehearsal rooms, and gallery spaces, while larger areas were used for performances and events.
The center includes galleries such as the Earl Gallery and Martino Gallery, showing works by regional and national artists. Performances take place in a main auditorium with about 725–750 seats. It is also home to groups like the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, Annapolis Opera, Ballet Theatre of Maryland, and Live Arts Maryland, and offers year-round classes in ceramics, painting, photography, woodturning, and dance.
