Mellon Square, Pittsburgh

Opened in 1955 during the city’s postwar Renaissance period, Mellon Square was among the first public parks in the United States built above an underground parking garage. Covering roughly 1.37 acres, the square was envisioned as a green retreat within the business district, offering a quieter counterpoint to the surrounding office towers and busy streets. Funded through support from the influential Mellon family, the project became a symbol of Pittsburgh’s efforts to modernize and improve downtown life.

The park was designed by landscape architect John O. Simonds in collaboration with the architectural firm Mitchell & Ritchey. Its layout reflects mid-century Modernist principles, with geometric paving, symmetrical planting beds, raised terraces, and carefully arranged fountains. The central fountain remains the square’s defining feature, framed by seating areas and walkways.

The square is also framed by several historic landmarks. To its east stands the historic Omni William Penn Hotel. A major restoration completed in 2014 returned many of Mellon Square’s original 1950s design features, reinforcing its status as an important example of Modernist landscape architecture.
