Smithfield United Church of Christ, Pittsburgh

Smithfield United Church of Christ, Pittsburgh

The Smithfield United Church of Christ, established in 1782 by German immigrants in Pittsburgh, has a rich history and a distinctive presence in the city. The current church building, erected in 1927 at the intersection of Smithfield Street and Strawberry Way, is easily recognizable by its unique steeple, visible from various points in downtown Pittsburgh.

Remarkably, this is the fifth church built at this location and the sixth overall to serve the congregation. Despite its Lutheran roots, the church embraces diversity and cherishes religious freedom.

Initially, a modest one-room meeting house was constructed in 1783 at Diamond Alley (now Forbes Avenue) and Wood Street. However, in 1787, John Penn, Sr., and John Penn, Jr. generously granted a plot of land on Smithfield Street to the congregation for a larger church, parsonage, and cemetery. The first church on this site was completed in 1792.

Over the years, the congregation grew, necessitating larger facilities. In 1815, a more spacious church was built at the same location, followed by another upgrade in 1833, which included school rooms and an expanded sanctuary. The construction of a grand Gothic-style church with a towering 218-foot spire took place between 1875 and 1877.

The present church, which began construction in 1925, stands as a testament to the congregation's enduring presence. Consecrated in December 1926 and officially opened in October 1927, it is known as the Smithfield United Church of Christ. Adorned with inscriptions honoring its German heritage, the church holds a cherished place in the community.
