Memorial House of Stefan Baciu, Brasov
The Memorial House of Stefan Baciu in Brasov stands as a tribute to one of the country's most prominent cultural figures. Erected between 1930 and 1931 by Ioan Baciu, Stefan's father, the building was designed by architect Coloman Halasz in the interwar modernist style. Its distinctive features include a sloping tiled roof, rectangular skylights, and a bow window projecting from the southwestern corner of the upper story. Originally a family residence, this house has since become a cultural landmark.
Born in 1918, Stefan Baciu was a prolific poet, essayist, journalist, art critic, translator, diplomat, and university professor. After a life dedicated to literature and diplomacy, much of it spent in exile, he was honored posthumously with a museum in his name. The memorial house was established in 2003 through a donation by the Baciu family, making it the first museum in Romania dedicated to an exiled Romanian intellectual.
The museum is located on the ground floor of the house, featuring three showrooms and a document storage area. The basement houses additional storage for books, furniture, and personal items. Visitors can explore an extensive collection of approximately 10,000 artifacts, including decorative and fine arts such as Biedermeier furniture, porcelain, ivory, and paintings. The museum also showcases a remarkable library of 3,700 books and over 1,800 manuscripts, spanning multiple languages, including Romanian, German, English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
Of particular note is the collection of works authored by Stefan Baciu, including early Romanian editions and international publications in Spanish and Portuguese. The museum also displays rare issues of Mele, an international poetry journal curated by Baciu, which features original works in multiple languages.
The Memorial House of Stefan Baciu serves as a vibrant testament to a remarkable life shaped by creativity, resilience, and global influence. It is a must-visit destination for literature and art enthusiasts, preserving the legacy of a true cultural ambassador.
