Miltenberg Castle, Miltenberg
Mildenburg Castle, locally just “Mildenburg” is one of the most visible landmarks in the region - a castle whose origins stretch back nearly nine centuries. The first construction began around the middle of the 12th century, commissioned by a noble named Burkard under the rule of King Conrad III. It later came into the ownership of the Archbishop of Mainz around the year 1200. Its strategic position above the town aimed to guard key routes along the Main River and act as a customs post, observing and controlling movement.
Over the centuries, Mildenburg has survived wars, destruction, reconstruction, and changes of ownership. The oldest and most surviving structure is its 27-metre tall keep, built in solid dressed stone, which offers sweeping views of the town and the Main valley below. Other parts of the castle complex, including the residential wings and defensive walls, reflect later medieval and early modern modifications - particularly after damage during conflicts such as the Second Margrave War, and during periods of rebuilding under archbishops and princes.
Today, the castle is home to the Museum Burg Miltenberg, which reopened after extensive renovation in 2011. The museum combines historic and religious art - including icons from the Russian, Greek, and Romanian traditions - with modern art of the 20th and 21st century. There is also a small café in the castle yard, offering a quiet place to rest and soak in views and atmosphere.
