Schnatterlochturm, Miltenberg

Schnatterlochturm, Miltenberg

The Schnatterlochturm is a medieval tower gateway, part of the town’s old fortifications, marking a boundary where the built town and the forested hillside meet. The name Schnatterlochturm, sometimes just called Schnatterloch, has its origins in the old German word ”Snade”, meaning a boundary. Historically, the town wall here included a drainage channel, running through an opening in the tower that carried rainwater through the wall and into the market area.

Architecturally, the tower isn’t overwhelming in height, but it is memorable in its placement and character. Surrounded by half-timbered houses on the old market square, its medieval stonework and archway contrast beautifully with the ornate facades and timber frames of nearby buildings. Walking through its arch, one enters a footpath that leads directly up into the forested slopes toward Mildenburg Castle. It also offers a quieter moment slightly removed from the bustle of the market.

Not even the small towns were safe from the wrath of the Nazis. Following the mass deportation of the Jewish population, the cobblestones of Miltenberg became dotted with brass Stolpersteine—stumbling stones—courtesy of artist Gunter Demnig.

Miltenberg’s name comes from the castle above the town—Mildenburg—from which the settlement below took its name.
