Misericórdia Chapel, Albufeira

Misericórdia Chapel, Albufeira

The Misericordia Chapel, also known as the Governor's Chapel, occupies the site of a former Moorish mosque and is one of Albufeira’s most historically layered buildings. In 1499, following the Christian reconquest, the structure was transformed into a chapel of mercy, or Capela da Misericordia, and redesigned in the late Gothic style. Despite damage from the 1755 earthquake, several original elements survived, including the main doorway, the apse, and the triumphal arch, all echoing its 15th-century origins.

The chapel’s façade reflects post-earthquake reconstruction, with a visible pediment marking the changes made in the 18th century. Inside, the single nave opens to a small chancel covered by a groin vault. A Manueline-style triumphal arch frames the altar space, blending simplicity with ornate detail typical of Portuguese late Gothic design. The building’s compact scale enhances the solemnity of its interior, which features a carved wooden altarpiece housing images from the 17th and 18th centuries.

At the heart of the chancel stands the statue of Our Lady of the Visitation, a central figure in the chapel’s devotional focus. Nearby rests the tomb of Rui Dias, believed to be a former commandant of Albufeira Castle, reinforcing the building’s historic role as a governor’s chapel. Statues of the Dead Father and other figures further enrich the chapel’s religious atmosphere and artistic value.

Today, the Misericordia Chapel stands as a rare blend of Christian, Gothic, and Islamic influences. Its preserved elements and adaptive history make it a meaningful stop for those interested in the layered past of the Algarve.

Albufeira is one of the Algarve’s oldest settlements, its history closely tied to the coast, fishing, and successive waves of conquest. The town’s name derives from the Arabic al-Buḥayra, meaning “the lagoon” or “the small sea,” a reference to the sheltered waters and coastal inlets that once defined the area.
