Mongolian National Modern Art Gallery, Ulaanbaatar

The Mongolian National Modern Art Gallery is a public, state-supported institution in Ulaanbaatar devoted to modern and contemporary art produced in Mongolia. Its collections include paintings, sculpture, prints, craftwork, and other media that explore how the country’s rich traditions intersect with more recent artistic experimentation.

The gallery became a standalone entity in 1991 when it was separated from the Fine Arts Museum of Mongolia. Since then, it has steadily expanded its holdings and today has a permanent collection numbering over 4,000 works - although only a small portion are on display at once. These works cover a broad range: from depictions of Mongolia’s nomadic heritage and sweeping landscapes to more avant-garde, modern and post-modern works that address changing ideas, forms, and social themes.

The interior of the gallery is divided into several distinct exhibition halls, each with its own focus or theme. Notable halls include the “Exceptionally Valuable Art Hall”, “The Great Hall” and the Northern Hall. Within these halls, examples range from masterworks by celebrated artists to thematic shows, such as nature-inspired art, pattern works, satirical or caricature exhibitions, and rotating solo or group exhibitions.
