Museum of Mongolian Costumes, Ulaanbaatar

The Museum of Mongolian Costumes offers a vivid glimpse into Mongolia’s rich textile and dress heritage. Established in 2005, the museum is dedicated to showcasing traditional garments from Mongolia’s many ethnic groups, illustrating how clothing and adornment are deeply woven into the country’s cultural identity.

The museum’s mission is two-fold: to educate younger Mongolians about their dress traditions, and to expose foreign visitors to the beauty, craftsmanship, and cultural meaning behind traditional Mongolian garments. Among its exhibits are “deel” (traditional long gowns), winter deels lined with sheepskin, lighter summer versions, along with jackets, and traditional boots called “gutul”.

There are items from ethnic minorities such as the Üzemchin, Zakhchin, Torguud, Khoton, and Kazak peoples. Some of the pieces are recent designer interpretations, so you see both historic, folkloric garments and modern, stylised ones that reinterpret tradition.
In addition, the museum doesn’t just display clothes-there are also photo-exhibits, fashion & stage-show style presentations, a gift shop, a custom service for traditional garments, and design agency tied to traditional dress.
