Monument to Sadriddin Aini and Maxim Gorky, Dushanbe

Monument to Sadriddin Aini and Maxim Gorky, Dushanbe

The Monument to Sadriddin Aini and Maxim Gorky stands beside the House of the Union of Writers of Tajikistan. It honours two central literary figures of the Soviet period: Sadriddin Aini, a founder of modern Tajik literature, and Maxim Gorky, a leading Russian writer and promoter of Socialist Realism. Literary historians note that the two met at congresses and cultural gatherings, where discussions about language, education, and social change shaped their ideas and strengthened ties between Tajik and Russian literary circles.

The sculptural composition shows both writers seated next to each other in conversation. Their posture is relaxed, suggesting an exchange of ideas rather than a formal pose. A low decorative fence behind them frames the scene and separates the monument from the surrounding walkway. The figures are rendered in realistic detail, with attention to facial features and clothing typical of the early twentieth century.

Nearby decorative panels display a group of Eastern poets and thinkers, led by Omar Khayyam. These reliefs connect the monument to a longer literary tradition that predates the Soviet era. Together, the sculpture and panels reflect the role of the Writers’ Union as a centre of cultural policy, translation, and literary development during the twentieth century.
