Monument to the Free Schoolbook, Tijuana
The Monument to the Free Schoolbook honours Mexico’s free public textbook program, created in 1959 to support equal access to education. In a country filled with monuments to political leaders and military figures, this one stands out for celebrating the schoolbook as a civic symbol. It reflects the idea that knowledge should not depend on family income, but should be placed directly in the hands of every child.
Inaugurated on September 26, 1963, the monument had a memorable public opening attended by thousands of people, most of them local schoolchildren gathered to thank President Adolfo López Mateos. Its construction was controversial at the time, as the municipal government was under financial pressure and critics questioned the cost. Local officials, including municipal president Ildefonso Velázquez, reportedly helped cover part of the expense themselves.
Built from brick, rebar, and concrete, the monument has a practical civic character rather than a polished ceremonial look. Its design was developed by Homero Martínez de Hoyos, with seven sculpted children by Joaquín Chinas and the original textbook-cover mural by Joel González Navarro. Over the decades, the painted cover has changed with restorations, including work by local artist Ariana Escudero, helping preserve the image of children reaching toward education as a shared public right.
