La Especial, Tijuana

La Especial, Tijuana

La Especial is a long-running family restaurant best known for tacos al vapor, or steamed tacos, a style closely tied to everyday border-region dining. Its story began in 1952, when the original full-service Café La Especial operated below ground in the basement level of the historic Pasaje Gómez shopping arcade. For generations of locals and cross-border families, descending the stairs beneath its bright yellow neon sign became part of the experience, turning a simple meal into a familiar ritual.

The restaurant’s signature tacos are different from standard street tacos. The beef is finely shredded, lightly blended with potato, wrapped in double corn tortillas, lightly oiled, and then steamed until soft. They are traditionally served with house-pickled carrots, radishes, green onions, and salsa. The menu also includes Mexican comfort dishes such as tamales, birria, caldo de res, enchiladas, guacamole, and chiles rellenos.

Although the original underground café closed in 2009, the family link to the site continued. A grandson of the founders later turned the old street-level curio stall above it into La Justina, a modern gastro-bar named for co-founder Justina Brambila. The vintage yellow Café La Especial sign remains inside, while La Especial continues as a family-owned name tied to a third generation and a related cross-border expansion.
