Morro do Cristo (Christ Hill), Salvador

Christ Hill in Barra, Salvador, is not just a hill-it’s a monumental piece of Bahia's history and culture. At the top, you'll find the iconic sculpture “Jesus, the Savior,” carved from a single block of Carrara marble by the talented Italian sculptor Pasquale de Chirico. Unveiled on December 24, 1920, this statue has become a symbol of faith, protection, and peace for both locals and visitors.

Before settling in its current spot in 1967, the statue had a different address. It originally stood near what’s now the Aeronautical City Hall, perched on a decorative pedestal in honor of Counselor José Botelho Benjamin, who gifted the city this magnificent work of art. Now, perched on the hill, the statue offers a panoramic view and a memory-making experience.

In 2017, it was officially designated a cultural heritage site, solidifying its importance to the city. If you want to dive into Salvador’s history and take in its beauty, this place should definitely be on your radar.
