Forte de Santa Maria (Fort of St. Mary), Salvador

Forte de Santa Maria (Fort of St. Mary), Salvador

The Fort of Saint Mary in Porto da Barra, built in the 17th century during the colonial era, was designed to protect the beach and the city’s original port. Its facade still proudly displays the emblem of the Empire of Brazil. Declared a historical site by the National Institute of Artistic and Historical Heritage (IPHAN) in 1938, it’s now managed by the Army. Inside, the fort offers not just a glimpse into history, but also a couple of attractions that will make your visit worthwhile.

For visitors and locals enchanted by the natural beauty of the area, there's the Bistrô Mirante Forte Santa Maria, tucked away in the fort’s courtyard, offering a charming open-air dining experience. Opened in 2020, this bistro bar provides excellent service in a cozy, welcoming setting, serving up delicious cuisine and delightful cocktails.

Seafood lovers can dig into a variety of broths, including sururu, shrimp, and octopus, or try tasty bites like cod fritters and shrimp in garlic and oil. For meat enthusiasts, there’s filet mignon with fries or sun-dried meat with farofa and vinaigrette. And if you’re in the mood for a snack, enjoy mini pastries, kibe, or tapioca cubes.

But it’s not just about the food-the real treat comes with the stunning panoramic sunset views over All Saints Bay. And to top it off, visitors can enjoy “Momentos Acústicos do Mirante,” an acoustic concert series running from 5 to 11 PM, Thursday through Sunday.

Since May 2016, the Santa Maria Fort has also hosted the Pierre Verger Space of Bahian Photography, offering an excellent cultural program that’s perfect for the whole family. So, whether you’re into history, food, or music, this fort has something for everyone!
