Praia do Farol da Barra (Barra Lighthouse Beach), Salvador

Praia do Farol da Barra (Barra Lighthouse Beach), Salvador

The Barra Lighthouse Beach is Salvador’s main stage for sun seekers and wave chasers. With a sandy runway that seems endless, calm waters that feel like your own private pool at low tide, and waves begging to be surfed at high tide, this beach has something for everyone. It’s the perfect place to savor the city’s sunshine, even if you’re just here for a sunset stroll along the shore.

And as the name hints, the starring attraction is none other than the Barra Lighthouse, one of Salvador’s most photogenic landmarks. Perched at the beach’s right-hand edge, it beckons visitors, especially as the sun starts to dip.

The options for enjoying the scene are plentiful: lounge on the sand, wander along the boardwalk, sit under the shadow of the Forte of Saint Anthony, or climb the lighthouse itself for next-level views. Inside, you’ll find the Nautical Museum-a treasure trove of maritime history-and, bonus, a prime spot for happy hour where the cocktails come with a side of ocean breeze.

For those who like their beach days served with a side of creature comforts, the right end of the beach offers one of the rare gems: a restaurant right on the sand. You’ll find a cozy beach club and a café here too, perfect for sipping and snacking without ever losing sight of the sea.

The beachfront promenade has more dining options, though not quite on the sand. On the left side of the beach, you’ll find the Hill of Christ, a hilltop lookout with knockout views of the Bay of All Saints.

A visit to this beach isn’t complete without a leisurely stroll from one end to the other. The boardwalk is buzzing with joggers, tourists, and locals soaking in the vibe. When you’re ready to park yourself on the sand, you’ll find chairs and umbrellas available for rent. (A heads-up: local vendors can be a bit persistent, so if you’d rather not partake, a polite “no, thanks” should do the trick. Just pick your spot, roll out your towel, and enjoy.)
