Musee de l'Homme (Museum of Humanity), Paris
Unveiled to the public in 1938, the Musée de l'Homme was established by the renowned ethnologist, Paul Rivet, with a mission to understand humanity "as an indivisible entity across space and time." ; a mission that remains as relevant today as ever before, as it draws upon a vast and varied collection, an inheritance of several centuries of fieldwork, donations, and acquisitions, further enriched by the ever-evolving knowledge gained through decades of studies across all branches of the human sciences.
Following a significant refurbishment, the museum reopened its doors in October 2015, offering an expansive surface area of 16,000 m², dedicated to exhibiting and exploring humanity as a biological, cultural, and social phenomenon. Its path of exposition strives to provide a thought-provoking and enlightening approach to answering some of the most fundamental existential questions humanity has grappled with over time, such as "Who are we?", "Where do we come from?" and "Where are we going?" – while never losing sight of humanity's unique and irreplaceable place within the greater chain of living organisms.
One of the most popular exhibits is the Gallery of Man, which takes visitors on a journey through humanity's evolution using a variety of multimedia tools, including interactive displays, films, and audio guides, to create an immersive experience. Another notable exhibit is the Alchemy section, which showcases the history of different techniques used in the production of art and other cultural artifacts. Past temporary exhibits have included topics such as the history of chocolate and the relationship between humans and the natural world.
Tip:
Sit down at the on-site café, providing a welcome respite where you can indulge in a bite and unwind. In addition to its other delights, the café affords visitors an incredible view of the Eiffel Tower.
