Musee des Beaux-Arts (Museum of Fine Arts), Nimes
The Museum of Fine Arts was originally built at the start of the 20th century to house the city's art collections. Nearly a century later, it underwent a stunning renovation led by architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte. This renovation preserved the building’s original exterior while updating the interior for modern needs. A standout feature in the atrium is an ancient mosaic depicting the myth of Admetus's marriage, discovered in Nîmes in 1883.
The museum offers a chronological journey through the art of various schools. It features Italian art from the 14th to the 18th century, showcasing artists like Giambono, Bassano, and Preti. The Northern schools, from the 16th to the 18th century, include works by Bramer, Rubens, De Heem, Both, and Pynacker. French schools from the 17th to the 19th century are represented by Chaperon, Reynaud Levieux, Boucher, De Troy, Natoire, Sigalon, and Delaroche. Among the museum's treasures is the 15th-century Foulc tondo, a faience Madonna by Andrea della Robbia.
The museum's collection spans 3,600 works, featuring Italian art from the 14th to the 18th centuries, Northern European art from the 16th to the 18th centuries, and French art from the 17th to the 19th centuries.
