Museo del Oro Zenu (Zenu Gold Museum), Cartagena

The Zenu Gold Museum, located in a historic colonial building on Bolivar Square, offers a fascinating introduction to the Zenu, an Indigenous culture that flourished in Colombia’s Caribbean region long before the arrival of the Spanish. Established by the Bank of the Republic in 1982, the museum reopened in 2023 following an extensive renovation.

The Zenu people were renowned for their sophisticated gold work and remarkable management of the landscape, developing extensive networks of canals and raised fields to control seasonal flooding. Their finely crafted gold ornaments attracted the attention of Spanish conquistadors, who looted Indigenous treasures and graves during the colonial conquest, resulting in the loss of countless objects.

Today, the museum preserves and displays hundreds of archaeological objects, including gold jewellery and ornaments, ceramics, pottery and other artefacts. Particularly intriguing are the elaborate gold representations of animals, birds and other creatures. Look closely at the earrings, pendants and figurines to appreciate techniques such as lost-wax casting and hammering, which demonstrate the remarkable skill of pre-Hispanic goldsmiths.

The displays extend beyond gold, exploring Zenu society and its relationship with water, animals, music and the surrounding landscape. Modern multimedia and interactive elements help bring these themes to life.

Spread across two storeys and free to visit, the Zenu Gold Museum provides an excellent opportunity to discover a much older layer of Cartagena’s history—one that began centuries before the colonial walls, churches and squares that characterise the Old Town today.
