Plaza de Bolivar (Bolivar Square), Cartagena

Bolivar Square, in the heart of Cartagena’s Old Town, is one of the city’s most inviting public spaces and a leafy retreat from the surrounding colonial streets. During the Spanish colonial period, it was known by several names, including Cathedral Square and later Inquisition Square, after the Tribunal of the Inquisition was established in Cartagena in 1610. The square witnessed public ceremonies and events associated with this darker chapter of the city’s history.

Its present name honours Simon Bolivar, famously known as “The Liberator,” who played a crucial role in the independence of Colombia and several other South American countries from Spanish rule. At the centre of the square stands an impressive bronze equestrian statue of Bolivar, resting on a granite pedestal. Created by Venezuelan sculptor Eloy Palacios, it has occupied this prominent position since 1896.

Today, the square contains a lush park filled with mature trees, tropical vegetation, fountains and plenty of benches, providing a welcome escape from Cartagena’s Caribbean heat. Take a seat in the shade and admire the statue while watching everyday life unfold around you.

Bolivar Square is surrounded by handsome historic buildings featuring arcaded walkways, balconies and tiled roofs. Nearby landmarks include Cartagena Cathedral, the Zenu Gold Museum and the Palace of the Inquisition. With its greenery, elegant architecture and layers of history, Bolivar Square offers both a peaceful place to rest and an excellent setting in which to appreciate Cartagena’s colonial heritage.
