Museo del Risorgimento e Istituto Mazziniano (Museum of the Risorgimento and Mazzinian Institute), Genoa
The Museum of the Risorgimento and Mazzinian Institute offers a fascinating journey through the years leading to Italian unification. Initially established in 1915 inside the White Palace, it was permanently relocated in 1934 to the 15th-century Adorno Palace-Giuseppe Mazzini’s birthplace. The building underwent restoration in 2005 to mark the 200th anniversary of his birth.
Today, it serves both as a museum and a cultural institute, featuring a historical archive and library, and offering an in-depth look at the Risorgimento-the 19th-century movement that led to the unification of Italy and the birth of the modern Italian state.
Spread across 14 rooms, the exhibition follows the broad arc of Italian history-from the Genoese uprising against Austrian forces in 1746 to the revolutionary energy of the Young Italy movement, the Wars of Independence, and the famous Expedition of the Thousand in 1860. It also includes references to both World Wars. Among the most notable displays are original artifacts from the era, including portraits of Mazzini, Garibaldi, and Mameli, period uniforms, weapons, personal belongings such as Mazzini’s guitar, and the original handwritten version of Italy’s national anthem, Brothers of Italy, by Mameli.
