Museo Rafael Obregon Loria, San Jose

Museo Rafael Obregon Loria, San Jose

The Rafael Obregon Loria Museum (Museo Rafael Obregon Loria), a compact establishment, is home to an extensive collection showcasing the historical and political movements that emerged in Europe during the first half of the 19th century, which strongly influenced Latin America in the latter half. The museum's focus centers on the roles of Freemasonry and liberalism, which were instrumental in the profound restructuring of the Costa Rican State during the late 19th century.

Rafael Obregón Loría, an eminent scholar of Costa Rican history, was a Master in the country's Masonic Lodge. He was also the one that established the museum in 1937.

The museum's visitors have the opportunity to peruse an array of documents and artifacts associated with the secret liberal societies that were active in Costa Rica at that time. These groups had a significant impact on the country's social and political evolution, and the museum endeavors to spotlight their contributions to Costa Rican history.

One of the museum's noteworthy displays features an oil painting portraying a member of the Costa Rican bishopric adorned with numerous Masonic symbols. This painting serves as a potent representation of the sway that Masonic ideals and values held in Costa Rican society.
