Museum FLUXUS+, Potsdam

Museum FLUXUS+, Potsdam

The Museum FLUXUS+, located in Potsdam’s cultural hub Schiffbauergasse, opened in April 2008 as the city’s first museum dedicated to modern art. Occupying a two-story building with a 1000 square meter exhibition space, the museum showcases artworks primarily from private collections. It features a large art+life shop, a café, and an atrium used for temporary exhibitions and events, establishing itself as a vibrant cultural meeting point for artists and art enthusiasts.

The museum's permanent exhibition focuses on the international and intermedia art movement Fluxus. On the ground floor, visitors can explore works by key Fluxus artists from the 1960s, including Wolf Vostell, Emmet Williams, Ben Patterson, and Nam June Paik. To provide a broader perspective on the avant-garde of the second half of the 20th century, the museum also displays pieces by artists such as Arman, Jean-Jacques Lebel, Christo, Niki de Saint Phalle, Raymond Hains, Jacques de la Villeglé, and Ann Noël.

The second floor of the museum is dedicated primarily to the art and life of Wolf Vostell, emphasizing smaller art objects, sketches, and paintings that embody his philosophy, "Leben ist Kunst. Kunst ist Leben" ("Life is Art. Art is Life"). This collection spans Vostell’s career, from his earliest sketches to works completed shortly before his death, highlighting his contributions as a Fluxus and happening artist, designer, composer, painter, and video art pioneer.

Additionally, the museum presents contemporary interpretations of the "Kunst ist Leben" concept through the works of four modern artists: Costantino Ciervo, Hella De Santarossa, Lutz Friedel, and Sebastian Heiner. These exhibits continue to explore and expand upon the Fluxus movement's enduring influence on contemporary art.

Sanssouci Park Walking Tour

Sanssouci Park is a unique Potsdam landmark that occupies 290 hectares in the heart of the city. The Park is named after the Sanssouci Palace that it surrounds, which in turn takes its name from the French phrase "sans souci", which means carefree, and implies that the palace was designated as a place of fun, rather than a seat of power.

Indeed, the Sanssouci Palace was built in 1747...  view more

Neuer Garten Walking Tour

Laid out at the behest of Friedrich William II in 1787, Potsdam's Neuer Garten (New Garden) was indeed "new" compared to the already in place Sanssouci Park.

Between 1816 and 1828, the area was modified further as an English-style, open landscape garden, with an aim to reproduce nature – trees and plants were left to grow naturally, unshaped and untrimmed. Rural life was also...  view more
