Museum of Health Care, Tashkent

Located in Tashkent’s Mirabad district, the Museum of Health Care of Uzbekistan stands as a testament to the evolution of medicine and hygiene among the Uzbek people. Founded in 1973 by Professor Mikhail Yakovlevich Yarovinskiy, a renowned figure from the Moscow Medical Academy, the museum offers an engaging exploration of healthcare history through its extensive collection of approximately 12,000 artifacts.

The museum’s six departments house a diverse array of exhibits, including sculptures, documents, photographs, and archaeological finds, all related to the history and development of medicine. Among its highlights is a remarkable collection of surgical tools inspired by the writings of the medieval Persian polymath Abu Ali Ibn Sina (Avicenna), often hailed as the "father of modern medicine." These tools reflect the enduring influence of Ibn Sina’s teachings, which even inspired the great artist Michelangelo.

One of the museum’s most fascinating features is the “glass man,” a full-scale, anatomically accurate model with illuminated internal organs, one of only five in existence worldwide. Visitors can also delve into the history of hygiene, including displays on the traditional eastern bath, or hammam, celebrated for its therapeutic benefits. Detailed reproductions of oriental miniatures adorn the walls, illustrating essential topics like hygiene practices and the impact of cleanliness on public health throughout history.

The museum’s architecture reflects a Middle Ages Eastern style, with walls decorated with intricate oriental designs that enhance the cultural experience. A prominent monument to Abu Ali Ibn Sina graces the museum, honoring his contributions to medicine. Visitors can trace the development of medical practices from ancient remedies to modern techniques, gaining insights into both the triumphs and challenges of health care.

The Museum of Health Care of Uzbekistan, one of only five in the post-Soviet republics, uniquely highlights the history of medicine and the importance of hygiene in combating illness. Through its artifacts and educational displays, it celebrates medical advancements while promoting health awareness and disease prevention.
