Museum of Pharmacy, Basel

Museum of Pharmacy, Basel

The Pharmacy Museum of the University of Basel, located in the historic center of Basel, offers an in-depth exploration of the history of medicinal remedies and their preparation. Founded in 1924 by pharmacist and lecturer Josef Anton Häfliger (1873–1954), the museum was initially created as a scientific collection for teaching purposes and has been preserved as a "scientific cabinet" ever since.

Housed in the historic building, the museum occupies a site rich in history. The building, first mentioned in 1316, served as a bathhouse before becoming the home of notable figures such as renowned printer Johannes Frobenius and his guest, Erasmus of Rotterdam. Illustrators like Hans Holbein the Younger and alchemist Paracelsus also worked here in the 16th century, contributing to the building’s storied past.

The museum showcases one of the largest and most significant collections of pharmaceutical artifacts, including pharmaceutical ceramics, alchemical tools, historical first aid kits, mortars, and rare medications. Three antique pharmacy interiors illustrate the evolution of pharmaceutical practice, ranging from an ornate 1755 court pharmacy to a modernized 1900s Basel pharmacy, now functioning as a museum shop. The museum also boasts a prominent collection of Faience pottery, used as containers for remedies since the 15th century.

Two historical laboratories enhance the experience: a 16th-17th century alchemical lab, reflecting the era’s quest for the philosopher's stone, and an early 19th-century pharmaceutical lab for manual medicinal preparation. These exhibits highlight the transition from mystical to scientific approaches in medicine.

Visitors can browse the museum shop, located in the former Barfüsser Pharmacy, which offers unique souvenirs such as teas, herbs, and pharmaceutical glassware. Entry to the shop is free, making it an accessible introduction to the museum’s historical ambiance.

Basel is the city of churches. Indeed, nowhere else in Switzerland will you find as many of them, both old and new, as here. Despite serious losses to the Reformation period, a good number of local temples have survived. Today, the vast majority of religious buildings, including the listed medieval Basel Minster, belong to the Evangelical Reformed Church.

Basel Introduction Walking Tour

The modern and bustling city of Basel gets its name from a third-century Roman castle that stood here. It is likely the modernization of "Villa Basilius," or "Estate of Basilius." Interestingly, the basilisk has been closely associated with the city and used in the coat of arms and coins. The association is likely simple assonance rather than anything more profound.
