Narinkka, Helsinki

Narinkka, Helsinki

Narinkka Square, situated in Helsinki's Kamppi district, is a bustling center for both locals and tourists. It is surrounded by notable landmarks such as the Kamppi Center to the west, the historic former financial building of the Turku barracks to the east, and the Scandic Hotels hotel Simonkenttä to the south. Salomonkatu Street marks its northern boundary, now a pedestrian zone, making the square more accessible and attractive. Adjacent to Narinkka lies the tranquil Kamppi Chapel, also known as the Silence Chapel, providing a serene spot for contemplation amidst the urban bustle.

Narinkka, named after the Russian phrase "на рынке" (meaning "at the market square"), was a marketplace for used clothes in Helsinki from 1876 to 1929. It was situated along Simonkatu, now the location of Scandic Hotel Simonkenttä. The tradition of selling secondhand clothing dates back to the 18th century in Helsinki, initially near the main military outpost and later at the Bank of Finland lot, before being relocated to Kamppi.

The square, as we know it today, was designed in 2005 alongside the construction of the Kamppi Center, signifying a significant shift from its historical purpose. Since then, Narinkka Square has become a focal point for community gatherings and cultural events, hosting various public activities such as exhibitions, sports competitions, and outdoor concerts. Notably, it served as the venue for the Eurovillage event during the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest in Helsinki.

Adding to its cultural significance is the 2006 sculpture "Leverty" (Yrittäjäveistos) by Eva Löfdahl, honoring Finnish entrepreneurs, which adds to the square's visual and historical appeal.
