Kiasma, Helsinki

Kiasma is Finland’s leading museum of contemporary art and one of Helsinki’s most recognizable modern buildings. Opened in 1998, it forms part of the Finnish National Gallery and presents contemporary Finnish and international art. Its name refers to the chiasma, the crossing point of the optic nerves in the brain—a fitting concept for a museum devoted to new ways of seeing and interpreting the world.

The building's flowing architecture is an integral part of the museum experience. To fully appreciate how the layout interacts with your body, cross the main lobby and step onto the sloping concrete ramps of the central atrium—a series of gently inclined, black-tinted concrete walkways that draw you into a slow spiral through the heart of the structure.

Inside, the galleries vary in size, and many feature gently curved walls, irregular angles, and carefully controlled natural light. Northern daylight, entering through skylights and other openings, creates a distinctive atmosphere and gives the artworks a changing backdrop throughout the day. The architectural "secret" behind this effect is easily observed on the fourth or fifth floors. Look up into the ceiling vaults to locate the glass-framed light nozzles. These curved skylight openings are designed to capture and diffuse the horizontal Nordic light.

Kiasma presents rotating exhibitions rather than a single permanent display. Exhibitions may include painting, sculpture, photography, video, installations, performance art, music, lectures, and experimental projects.

As a final architectural highlight before entering the exhibition galleries, walk through the glass doors along the building's western side to view the curved zinc-and-titanium shell façade, a giant metallic envelope that forms the outer spine of the galleries you are exploring.

Beyond the galleries, visitors can enjoy a café, museum shop, and research library.
