National Museum, Krakow

The National Museum in Krakow stands as a vital destination, boasting one of the nation's most expansive art galleries. Its origins trace back to the late 19th century when it pioneered the concept of a national art-collecting establishment. Today, this institution safeguards a remarkable assortment of around 780,000 artistic artifacts, encompassing a spectrum from classical archaeology to contemporary art. A particular emphasis is placed on Polish painting, showcasing the nation's creative heritage.

The treasures amassed within this museum are primarily housed within the Main Building, where both the collections and administrative offices find their place. Additionally, the museum extends its presence throughout the city with nine distinct divisions.

A notable highlight within the Main Building is the recently rejuvenated Upper Gallery of Twentieth Century Polish Art. This gallery proudly features acclaimed masterpieces by renowned artists such as Jacek Malczewski, Leon Wyczółkowski, and Włodzimierz Tetmajer. Among its expansive assortment, you'll find an impressive compilation of Stanisław Wyspiański's works. Furthermore, the gallery houses creations from the interwar and postwar periods, showcasing the brilliance of Polish cubists, expressionists, colorists, and the avant-garde from the 1930s, along with representatives of the New Directions movement from the 1960s.

While exploring the museum, one should not overlook the exceptional decorative arts and crafts, which highlight the exquisite craftsmanship of various eras. Equally captivating is the collection of militaria, spanning a timeline from the 12th to the 20th century. This assortment includes an array of Polish armor from the 16th and 17th centuries, along with Polish sabers, firearms, saddles, caparisons, military uniforms from the 18th to 20th century, and a diverse array of military orders, medals, and distinctions. The museum's holdings extend to encompass a diverse collection of Western and Eastern European weaponry as well.

Why You Should Visit:
Quite a collection of collections! Entry prices are reasonable and you can pay for a combined ticket, which allows entry to all exhibitions.

Tip:
Leonardo da Vinci's "Lady with an Ermine" is here temporarily and is beautifully displayed, but the Polish exhibits, featuring world-class artists in their own right, are also a great find.
You can use the audio guides at extra cost if you wish so and chill in the café. The museum shop has all you need to buy – books or souvenirs from your visit.
