Groteska Theatre, Krakow

Groteska Theatre, Krakow

A theatre like no other in the world, the Groteska Theatre aims to only tickle ones imagination with stories that are far from reality. Unlike other theatres, which tell tales that are inspired from life and the true reality of existence, the Groteska aspires to take its audiences into a mystical land of fairy tales, elves, myths and magic.

Open since 1945, the Groteska reaches its audiences through puppets, paintings, masks and artists. It was founded by one of the most outstanding stage personalities of the era- Zofia and Wladyslaw Jarema. Both were regarded as magnificent stage directors and more so, pioneers in bringing forth the unique and modern concept of puppet theatre to post war Poland.

For those who would like the dive into the evening life of Krakow, there is nothing like the Groteska. The theatre has three distinct types of plays that cater to different aged audiences. First, there are the fairy tales that are directed at children. This may be done with the medium of puppets instead of artists. The second are the legends that are directed at the school going audiences, where legends of warriors and folklore of the land are enacted. The last type, catered for adults come under the category of myths, where stories are told through masked actors and paintings.
