New Riga Theater, Riga
The New Riga Theatre serves as a hub for modern performing arts, designed specifically for an independent and discerning audience. Established in 1992, the theatre underwent significant transformation under the artistic direction of Alvis Hermanis, who took the helm in 1997. Known for its high professional standards and commitment to ethical and aesthetic quality, the theatre strives to present innovative performances that align both in content and form with the discerning tastes of a modern, educated, and socially active audience.
Following a comprehensive seven-year renovation, in the spring of 2024, the theatre triumphantly returned to its original premises on Lāčplēša Street. The renovated venue now houses three distinct performance spaces: The Big Stage, The New Stage, and The Small Stage, each designed to offer unique theatrical experiences.
The New Riga Theatre has not only made a mark locally but also on the global stage, having performed at major international festivals such as the Festival d'Avignon, The Edinburgh International Festival, Wiener Festwochen, Salzburger Festspiele, and Holland Festival, among others. With tours extending to over 200 towns and cities across 40 countries, the theatre has demonstrated its wide appeal and capacity to engage diverse audiences worldwide, further establishing its status as a leading institution in the world of international theatre.
