Norfolk Botanical Garden, Norfolk (must see)
The Norfolk Botanical Garden took shape in 1938 on city land chosen for its elevated ground and nearby reservoir. With support from the Works Progress Administration, more than 200 African American women, along with several men, undertook the massive task of clearing the site and planting thousands of azaleas, rhododendrons, trees, shrubs, and daffodils.
Today, visitors can explore more than 60 distinct garden areas, accessible by walking paths, tram rides, or even boat tours. These range from traditional settings like the Japanese and Colonial Gardens to playful and interactive spaces such as the WOW: World of Wonders Children’s Garden. Highlights include the Bristow Butterfly Garden, Rose Garden, Native Plant Garden, Fragrance Garden, and impressive collections such as the Bicentennial Rose Garden and Tropical Greenhouse.
Winding paths, waterways, and wide open lawns create a sanctuary for more than 175 bird species. Beyond its living exhibits, the garden features a remarkable Statuary Vista, with majestic marble sculptures by Moses Jacob Ezekiel-crafted in the late 19th century and representing historic artists. Alongside its natural appeal, the garden also hosts community programs, seasonal festivals, wellness activities, and visiting food trucks.
