Nouvel Olympia, Tours

The Nouvel Olympia in Tours, officially known as the Regional Drama Center of Tours Nouvel Olympia, stands as a pivotal cultural hub in the Touraine region. Originating from the transition of the former Cinema Olympia, this eminent venue now hosts the National Drama Center of Tours.

Constructed in 2002, the Nouvel Olympia was designed by architects Nicolas Michelin and Finn Geipel of LABFAC to meet the growing needs of the regional drama center, which previously operated out of the inadequate Louis Jouvet 4 room. The design cleverly navigates the challenges posed by a restricted urban site, measuring just 18 × 40 meters, and the necessity to respect the archaeological heritage of a Roman temple located underground.

The theater's architecture is notable for its multifunctional spaces ingeniously stacked within its compact footprint. The building integrates the bar and reception hall beneath the auditorium stands, a rehearsal room above the reception, and a foyer atop the rehearsal space, all interconnected by visually striking crossed staircases encased in glass and metal mesh visible from the street. This layout not only maximizes the use of limited space but also enhances the venue's urban presence.

At the heart of Nouvel Olympia is the main performance hall, boasting a stage measuring 13.30 meters by 12.20 meters and seating 450 spectators. This hall not only serves as the main performance space for the drama center but also as a vital component of Tours' cultural landscape, nestled among other key institutions like the Museum of Fine Arts, the Grand Théâtre, and the Château de Tours.

By revitalizing a historic cinema into a modern theatrical venue, the Nouvel Olympia significantly amplifies the cultural offerings of Tours, making it a cornerstone of artistic expression in the region.
