NYK Maritime Museum, Yokohama

NYK Maritime Museum, Yokohama

The NYK Maritime Museum in Yokohama gives visitors a deep dive into Japan's maritime history, focusing particularly on Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), a key player in Japan's naval development. Established in the 1870s and formally named in 1885, NYK was the first company in Japan to offer passenger liner services. Its initial route linked Yokohama and Shanghai in 1875, kickstarting a journey that saw the company expand globally by the late 19th century, reaching as far as London.

The museum displays a variety of artifacts showcasing NYK's history and its significant contributions to maritime endeavors. Visitors can explore original photographs, brochures, postcards, uniforms, maps, and items used in the daily operations of NYK vessels. Notably, the museum features detailed scale models of ships, offering a tangible connection to Japan's naval past.

Despite facing challenges, such as substantial losses during World War II resulting in 185 destroyed ships and the survival of only one passenger ship, the Hikawa Maru, NYK managed to recover and grow into a major player in global shipping. Today, it operates a fleet of cruise and cargo ships worldwide.

In a dedication to preserving its maritime heritage, NYK oversees the Hikawa Maru, a museum ship docked at Yamashita Park. This allows visitors to experience the luxury of first-class travel from the 1930s. Combination tickets are available for both the NYK Maritime Museum and the Hikawa Maru, offering a comprehensive view of Japan's naval history and NYK's significant role within it.
