Located in Yokohama’s waterfront Minato Mirai district, the CupNoodles Museum Yokohama is one of the city’s most unusual and entertaining attractions. Opened in 2011, this four-story museum is dedicated to instant noodles and to Momofuku Ando, the founder of Nissin Foods and the man who turned a simple food idea into a global phenomenon. In 1958, Ando created Chicken Ramen, the world’s first instant noodles, and in 1971 he introduced Cup Noodles, popularizing the now-familiar concept of noodles served in a disposable cup.

Rather than functioning as a traditional museum filled only with display cases, the attraction emphasizes hands-on experiences. The Instant Noodles History Cube presents thousands of instant noodle packages from around the world, showing how Ando’s invention developed into an international industry. The Momofuku Ando Story introduces visitors to his life, ideas, and persistence, including the small work shed where he experimented before creating Chicken Ramen.

For many tourists, the biggest draw is the My CupNoodles Factory, where visitors can design their own cup, choose a broth, and select four toppings to create a personalized cup of noodles to take home or enjoy later. Another popular activity is the Chicken Ramen Factory, where participants make noodles by hand and gain a clearer sense of the invention process behind this everyday food.

The museum also includes the Noodles Bazaar, where visitors can sample noodle dishes inspired by different countries and experience a variety of tastes and textures from around the world. Families with children may especially enjoy CupNoodles Park, an interactive play area designed for ages three to 12. Here, children pretend to become noodles themselves as they move through a life-size manufacturing process, from a climbing “noodle net” and seasoning “pool” to a virtual fryer, slide, and giant noodle cup.

Even travelers with little interest in instant noodles often find the museum surprisingly engaging. Its mix of food culture, playful design, family-friendly attractions, and Ando’s story of creativity and perseverance makes it a memorable stop in Yokohama.
