Ohrid Main Square, Ohrid

Ohrid Main Square, Ohrid

Kruševo Republic Square is located at the northern end of Ohrid’s Old Bazaar, where the long pedestrian shopping street opens into a broader public space. The square commemorates the Kruševo Republic, a short-lived rebel state proclaimed during the Ilinden Uprising against Ottoman rule in the town of Kruševo in 1903.

For generations, this part of Ohrid has been a meeting place as well as a center of trade. The Old Bazaar developed particularly during the Ottoman period and remains one of the liveliest commercial areas of the modern city, with shops, cafés, food stalls, and traditional crafts lining the streets around the square. Ottoman monuments also survive nearby. On the northern side stands the Mosque of Zeynel Abedin Pasha, while to the south, on Saint Clement of Ohrid Street, stands the Ali Pasha Mosque.

The square’s most famous landmark, however, is the enormous Chinar, or Oriental plane tree in the center of the square. Traditionally said to be more than 1,000 years old, it has become one of Ohrid’s best-known natural landmarks and has officially been recognized as a natural rarity. Its massive, partly hollow trunk and broad spreading branches give an idea of just how many generations have passed beneath its shade.

The atmosphere around the Chinar is friendly and relaxed. Shops and cafés line the edges of the square, while benches and shaded spots provide places to rest and watch the constant flow of local life.
